How Marriage And Family Difficulties Can Be Healed By Counseling
Marriage and family issues have always been one of the most discussed aspects of life in our world, and this has never been more the case than it is now. The family has always been the cornerstone of Western society, and it remains so today despite the many great changes we have lived through. There is no doubt that society has reached a point where it desperately needs to address the issues of what happens to people who don't fit in to this type of family unit, but there is an even greater need to tackle the rising difficulties people are having relating to one another within a family unit.
Before any attempt can be made to solve the problems of individual families, an attempt needs to be made to try to discover what is causing the difficulty in the first place. The first important point which does need to be made is that the figures make the problem seem far worse than it is. It is easy to measure the number of people who seek advice about a certain problem, but it is absolutely impossible to measure the numbers who have the same problem but suffer in silence. Measuring the numbers of families who would have sought help in the past had it been available to them is something which simply cannot be done.
The media has been obsessed with the rise in divorce rates and the numbers of marriages which are breaking down, but even these figures need to be understood in context. Before the laws were passed in every state allowing a quick and easy divorce, there were many people who desperately wanted to escape from their marriages, but who had absolutely no means of doing so. Some married people who could afford to even traveled to other jurisdictions so they could file for divorce, but most of those who wanted one had no way out.
Many social commentators have speculated on the reasons why more marriages are braking down, and why more families are finding it difficult to live together, but without drawing any conclusions which have led to breakthroughs. The pace of modern life is more hectic, there are more pollutants in the air, food and water we breathe, and more environmentally related illnesses such as food allergies and breathing difficulties. Families used to be grounded in one place, with the father having a job for life and the mother staying at home to care for the family. Children, on average, used to have more stability.
The children of modern parents often have to do more for themselves at an earlier age, as it is now normal for both of the parents to bring a working wage into the home. They are often forced to spend long periods of time alone, or with other children. There is rarely the same degree of closeness which was found in the most effective families of the past. The lives of children are made worse when parents mistakenly decide to stay together for their benefit, when there are sound reasons why the marriage should be ended.
Strenuous effort are being constantly made to develop forms of marriage and family counseling and therapy which will allow parents and partners to get over their problems and start to find satisfaction in their families and in each other again. There are many different approaches, many of which have been developed in the universities and colleges of the Western world. Academic theories need to be tested in the real world before they can be presented to the public as effective solutions.
If you are in need of marriage and family counseling, the best course of action is to research the possibilities which are available in your city, and especially any which are being offered through charitable organizations. You can try the first session to see if you think the therapy can help you, and then make the choice as to whether or not to continue. Be aware, though, that successful therapy will take more than just one session. The counselor will need to see each person individually and get to know how they see the problem, before any actual therapy can begin.
Once the counselor has had a session of individual one on one dialog with each person, they can then use their experience to tell them exactly where the marriage and family problems really lie. It is not possible to save every marriage, as there genuinely are cases where the partners will be far better off if they go their own separate ways, but if everyone is willing there are a great many marriages which can be saved. If the partners do stay together for the right reasons, that will create a better environment for the children, and will be the best solution for both marriage and family.
